Overview

Efficiency Snapshot

There are three gauges showing: True Shooting Percentage, Usage Percentage, and Plus/Minuscompared with the league average from the selected season. The player’s value appears on the dial, while the tick mark shows the league average. The gauge’s range also changes by season, so a player from the 1990s is measured against realistic 1990s numbers.


True Shooting (TS%)

Measures scoring efficiency across two-pointers, three-pointers, and free throws. It is more complete than regular field-goal percentage because it accounts for the extra value of three-pointers and includes free throws.

It is calculated from the player’s full-season points (PTS), field goals attempted (FGA), and free throws attempted (FTA), using season totals so a low-volume game doesn’t count as much as a high-volume game:

TS% = PTS ÷ [2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)] × 100

0.44 approximates how many free throws end in a possession. Most trips are two shots, but and-ones, three-shot fouls, and technicals mean it isn’t a clean 0.5.

Usage Percentage

Estimates how much of the team’s offense a player finished while on the court through shot attempts, free throws, or turnovers.

It is calculated from the player’s field goals attempted (FGA), free throws attempted (FTA), and turnovers (TOV) while the player was on the court, scaled against how much of the team’s own offense happened in those same minutes:

USG% = 100 × [(FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TOV) × (Team MP ÷ 5)] ÷ [MP × (Team FGA + 0.44 × Team FTA + Team TOV)]

MP = minutes played. The Team MP ÷ 5 term converts team minutes into an equivalent single player’s worth of court time, so the result is a rate (a share of possessions) rather than something that keeps climbing the more a player plays.

The season value shown is calculated by weighting each game by minutes played. This prevents a short five-minute appearance from having the same impact as a forty-minute game. Usage also adds important context to efficiency. A player with a high TS% and low usage has a different role from a player maintaining the same efficiency while handling a large share of the offense.

Plus/Minus

Shows the team’s average point difference while the player was on the court. For example, a plus-five means the team outscored its opponents by an average of five points during the player’s minutes. Because plus/minus is affected by teammates, opponents, and overall team quality, it should be treated as context, not as a final judgment of the player.


The league-average marker does not include every player. It only includes players who reached a minimum amount of playing time or shot attempts that season. This prevents players with very small samples from affecting the average too much. See the rate-stat thresholds.

Other Important Details

  • These gauges are available starting with the 1996–97 season because usage and plus/minus data are not available for earlier seasons.
  • A player’s own value will still appear even if the player did not reach the qualifying requirement. The requirements only decide who is included in the league average.

  • Data is available for Usage and Efficiency for any season going back to 1979-80.
  • Net rating needs modern tracking data, so it’s only offered from 1996-97 on — for players whose whole career predates that, the option isn’t shown.
  • Net rating shows a small-sample warning when a season is only a handful of games.

What's a salary cap?

Almost every chart on this tab leans on one idea, so start here. Each NBA team gets the same yearly budget for player salaries. That budget is the salary cap. It grows every year as the league earns more (roughly $11M per team in 1990, over $150M today). Because it grows, the same dollar figure means something totally different depending on the year: $3M was star money in the 1990s and end-of-bench money now.


Cap percentage

The fix used throughout this tab is cap percentage— what share of that year’s cap a salary took up:

cap % = salary ÷ that season’s salary cap × 100

A player at 25% of the cap took up a quarter of their team’s entire payroll budget, whether in 1995 or 2025 — so cap% is comparable across eras in a way raw dollars never are.
